Certified Pilates Instructor
The Pilates method was developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates, initially favored by dancers, when done correctly results in a longer, leaner, more flexible body.
The Pilates philosophy focuses on training the mind and the body to work together toward the goal of overall fitness. Pilates is a movement system, or method, that involves a series of specific exercises designed to strengthen our core, meaning our trunk and spinal musculature. The focus of the Pilates exercises is on quality, not quantity. The method utilizes specialized resistance-based training equipment and/or a mat, whereby one's own body is then used to create the resistance required to perform the exercises correctly.
Over the years Pilates has taken on many different shapes and forms due in part to the background of knowledge each teacher brings to the method. Pilates instruction can be as unique as the individual. There has been much controversy over what is deemed "true or pure" Pilates. The Pilates method is meant to move us forward to becoming responsible and in control of our bodies and our health. Its' goals are to enlighten, invigorate, and empower us and thus you must find what works best for you, your lifestyle and your goals.
According to Joseph Pilates, founder of the Pilates method, "Physical fitness is the first requisite to happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind that is fully capable of movement with spontaneity, zest and pleasure. Pilates restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit."
